A Turkish mosque association in Germany says its places of worship have increasingly been the target of attacks since the outbreak of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Since October 7, the start of the war, more than forty mosques in Germany have been ‘attacked’, said Eyüp Kalyon, secretary general of the Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs (DITIB).

“We see neo-Nazi signs on the walls of our mosques,” Kalyon told Turkish news agency Anadolu last week. “We find burnt pages from the Quran being thrown at the doors of mosques. In North Rhine-Westphalia alone, a total of seven mosques received insulting and threatening letters by post, as well as pieces of pork and burnt pages from the Koran. This is a blatant provocation,” Kaylon said. He also addressed reports of increasing racist incidents and verbal attacks on the streets against Muslim women who wear the hijab.

81 attacks since January

DITIB represents hundreds of Turkish mosque associations in Germany. The Turkish diaspora is the largest of its kind in the country and has been subject to neo-Nazi and racist attacks in the past. A total of 81 attacks have been carried out on religious institutions since January. The number of attacks has increased sharply in the past five weeks.

Kaylon emphasized that Muslims in Germany have always tried to be part of the solution. The attacks raised security measures for mosques to the highest level. We are in constant contact with the German security forces.

After France, Germany has the largest Muslim population in Europe. Of the approximately five million Muslims out of the 84 million inhabitants, approximately three million are of Turkish descent.
