Austria wants to pay reparations for the criminal prosecution of homosexuals. People targeted by the judiciary in the past because of the now repealed paragraphs must be rehabilitated and compensated, as Justice Minister Alma Zadic (Greens) announced on Monday.
Until a criminal justice reform in 1971, same-sex acts were generally prohibited in Austria. Even after that, some penal provisions remained in force. It was not until 2002 that the last of these paragraphs was repealed by the Constitutional Court.
In future, those affected should receive 3,000 euros for each overturned verdict and 1,500 euros for each year in prison. In addition, according to Zadic, 500 euros will be paid out per initiated investigation.
If victims of the old statutory scheme have suffered economic, professional or health disadvantages, they are entitled to an extra 1,500 euros. A total of 33 million euros is available for an estimated 11,000 affected people. (sda/dpa)
