On the Italian island of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea, Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna, spewed large amounts of glowing lava into the air on Sunday. In the evening there was a thick cloud of lava, igneous gases and rock above the mountain, which is more than 3,300 meters high. According to the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the so-called eruption column reaches a height of 4.5 kilometers. Explosions could be seen and heard again and again.
Ash also fell on several towns around Etna, such as Milo and Zafferana Etnea. However, initially there were no reports of major damage. Operations at Catania Island Airport continued. Mount Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe. The mountain is about 3350 meters high. However, the exact height changes time and time again due to eruptions and cinder cones. The volcano only rumbled for the last time on Saturday night. (SDA)
