The rescue ship “Ocean Viking” of the aid organization SOS Méditerranée rescued 128 migrants from distress in the Mediterranean Sea. The NGO said they were captured during three rescue operations off the coast of Libya on Friday and Saturday.
A total of 67 migrants were rescued on board two seaworthy boats on Friday. On Saturday, the “Ocean Viking” picked up another 61 people whose wooden boat was in distress.
The rescue ship would now set course for the port assigned by the Italian authorities in the town of Ortona on the Adriatic coast. SOS Méditerranée complained about the great distance from the port to the operating area. Those rescued would now have to endure “three more days of pointless travel to finally reach a place of safety.”
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Mediterranean Sea is the most dangerous migration route in the world. According to UN estimates, 2,468 people have died as they fled across the Mediterranean since the beginning of this year.
