In view of the strike threats from the train drivers’ union GdL, Deutsche Bahn is working on a significantly reduced emergency timetable for the Christmas holidays, according to a media report. As “Bild am Sonntag” (Bams) writes, ICE trains must be used that last as long as possible. For example, the connection from Hamburg via Cologne, Frankfurt and Stuttgart to Munich should be provided by a 376 meter long ICE with 918 seats.
As ‘Bams’ further writes, the emergency timetable would result in a total of 140 instead of 700 trains, less than 20 percent of the planned train connections. However, the use of buses would not be possible because there are not enough vehicles or drivers available.
The collective labor agreement negotiations between Bahn and GdL started on Thursday and will continue next week. The railway made an offer of eleven percent more wages and an inflation bonus of up to 2,850 euros for a term of 32 months. However, she described the reduction in working hours demanded by the union with full wage compensation as unfeasible.
To emphasize the GDL’s demands, GdL boss Claus Weselsky, union boss, has planned several strikes. In an interview with the ARD “Morgenmagazin” he recently indicated that the Christmas holidays could be exempt from work stoppages.
