Secretary of State of the United StatesAntony Blinken said that to achieve “sustainable peace” in Gaza, Israel “cannot reoccupy the Strip”, displace its citizens or reduce its territory, while the G7 called for a humanitarian pause.
“The only way to achieve sustainable peace is through the road on the non-displacement of Palestinians in Gaza“no further occupation of the Belt, blockade or reduction of territory,” Blinken said at a press conference on the occasion of his visit to Tokyo to participate in a meeting of G7 foreign ministers.
G7 calls for a humanitarian pause in Gaza
Blinken’s remarks came after G7 foreign ministers called for a humanitarian pause in Gaza to facilitate the creation of a safe corridor to allow immediate aid entry and called for everything possible to avoid an escalation and spread of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict .
In addition, they condemned the “terrorist attacks” by the Islamist group Hamas and “other groups” and called for “immediate release of hostages.”
In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of 7 industrialized countries of the world (Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom) call for respect for international laws and undertake to “engage” in the search for “a permanent and stable solution in Gaza for achieving lasting peace”.
Blok adds: “We support humanitarian pauses and corridors to facilitate urgently needed aid, the movement of civilians and the release of hostages.”
A message to Iran
It was unclear whether the Group of Seven members, joined by an EU representative, would be able to achieve such unity in their deliberations on the conflict, given the varying sensitivities among their members. when talking about topics such as Israeli law in order to defend themselves or increase the number of civilian casualties in Gaza.
Regarding tensions in the Middle East, the G7 foreign ministers’ statement also sends a message to Iran, calling on it to “refrain from supporting Hamas and from taking further actions that destabilize” the region, as “using their influence” to “reduce regional tensions”.
