According to the Ukrainian military, a Russian fighter jet fired a missile at a cargo ship flying the flag of the West African Republic of Liberia, damaging it in one of the Black Sea ports in the Odessa region. A Ukrainian pilot was killed on board the ship on Wednesday, according to a report from the Southern Military Command. Three Filipino crew members and a Ukrainian port worker were injured. Meanwhile, following the European Commission’s recommendation to start accession negotiations with Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky adopted a decree in preparation for this process.

The President’s Office reported on Wednesday that the government would be tasked with, among other things, bringing the Ukrainian legal situation into line with EU law. “We are taking the expected steps well prepared,” Zelensky said in his evening video message in Kiev on Wednesday.

Ukraine: Cargo ship attacked by Russia

According to a report from the Ukrainian Southern Military Command, a Russian fighter jet used a Ch-31P missile against the cargo ship as it entered one of the ports in the southern Ukrainian region of Odessa. Photos from outside and inside the ship released by the military showed debris from the impact. The army did not say exactly which ship was involved and in which port it happened. Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Olexander Kubrakow stated that the ship would transport iron ore to China. However, the information could not be independently verified.

Zelenskyj speaks of a memorable day

Conditions are attached to the European Commission’s recommendation to start accession negotiations with Ukraine. Before the first round of talks, the country must complete the reforms it has started to improve the fight against corruption, greater protection of minorities and less oligarchic influence. Ukraine sentences Kherson occupation chief to 15 years in prison

The Moscow-appointed regional administrative head of the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson, Vladimir Saldo, was sentenced in absentia by a Ukrainian court to 15 years in prison. According to the court, Saldo was found guilty of high treason, collaboration with the Russian occupier and justifying the Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to the court decision published online, the verdict is not yet final and can be appealed according to the procedure established by law. Balances of assets should therefore be confiscated.

Vladimir Saldo was mayor of Kherson between 2002 and 2012. After the Russian occupation of the region, Saldo was appointed by Moscow as head of the Russian military administration there and subsequently as “acting governor” of the Kherson region.

NATO Secretary General welcomes the progress of the F-16 project for Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was pleased with progress in the project to equip Ukraine with Western fighter aircraft. He said in Brussels on Wednesday that he was pleased that the first Dutch F-16 fighter jets had arrived in Romania to train Ukrainian pilots.

The Netherlands brought the first five F-16 fighter jets for Ukraine to a training center in Romania on Tuesday. Ukrainian pilots will be trained there in the future. It is estimated that pilot training will take a minimum of six months.

Slovakia stops plans to supply ammunition to Ukraine

As expected, the new Slovak government led by left-wing nationalist Prime Minister Robert Fico on Wednesday rejected an arms package for Ukraine drawn up by the previous government. The package, which mainly consisted of ammunition donations and amounted to around 40 million euros, was put together by then Defense Minister Martin Sklenar shortly before the parliamentary elections as a template for a government decision.
