It has been a few days since the murder of a young water polo coach (†21) shocked Sydney: Lilie J.* was found dead at her workplace, an expensive private school in the Australian city.

The case made headlines around the world: Lille J. was murdered with a hammer by a young sports teacher. The victim had a five-week relationship with the perpetrator and ended it shortly before his death. The sports teacher threw himself off a cliff shortly after the bloody act.

The brutal murder of Lilie J. is not an isolated incident. Six women have been murdered in Australia in the past ten days. In five out of six cases, the women died as a result of violence by men they knew.

Shortly before J’s death, a woman (†34) was also murdered in Perth, in the west of the country. Lawyer Alice M.* was found dead in a hotel room. A 42-year-old acquaintance was charged with murder a short time later. He was found with injuries believed to be self-inflicted.

At the same time, Logee O.* († 46) was found with life-threatening injuries in her home in the state of Victoria. She died shortly afterwards in hospital.

Also in O.’s case, a man (44) would be responsible for the woman’s death. According to Australian media, the two knew each other personally. The victim leaves behind four children. Two of them were also in the home when the incident occurred. They were unharmed.

65-year-old Thi Thuy H.* was also forcibly taken from her life at the end of October. Her husband is suspected of murder. Another woman died in a house fire. A 48-year-old man who had lived with the victim for several months was charged.

“It’s a national crisis”

Experts are deeply concerned about the numerous murders of women. According to the Australian Femicide Watch website, 58 women have been brutally murdered this year alone. According to Kate Fitz-Gibbon, professor at the Monash Gender and Family Violence Prevention Center, the current deaths are just “the tip of the iceberg”.

“It is a national crisis,” the expert said in an interview with Australian broadcaster ABC. As the report states, the government is already working on a proposal to end violence against women. For example, there is talk of introducing a national register for domestic violence. Violent people must be registered there.

Intimate partners and their family members should be granted access to the register upon request. (dzc)
