While older films often take first place when asked about the best films of all time, titles from recent years are usually mentioned when it comes to the best series – such as the war epic ‘Band Of Brothers’, which won 16 times Emmys or two Golden Globes-winning crime dramas ‘Breaking Bad’ or the Netflix hit ‘Stranger Things’. But what about series fans in Germany? What is the Germans’ favorite series?
According to the official figures from IVW for 2022, FILMSTARTS is the German-language site in the field of films and series with the largest reach, with a community that includes countless film and series fans. To discover the favorite series of the German audience, all you have to do is look at the voting results of our community. And at least The first place among FILMSTARTS users is no big surprise:

“Game Of Thrones” will probably be at the top of the list for most series fans and also ranks second in the IMDb top 100 series based on international user ratings. In Germany, however, the Westeros epic leads the way – and also almost has the most votes (only for ‘How I Met Your Mother’, even more series fans have rated on FILMSTARTS.de).
“Game Of Thrones” confident first place is somehow a bit surprising, especially considering that seasons 7 and 8 were unloved by many fans. Apparently, though, the controversial finale didn’t have much of an impact on the overall rating in this country – or maybe it didn’t bother some of you that much (even though the ratings for Season 8 are significantly worse).
The series that tops IMDb took second place for us: “Breaking Bad”. By the way, without exception, all titles in the ranking above are from the 2000s or 2010s, so this is also consistent with the introductory comment that new series are better appreciated. The oldest of the ten shows is ‘Band Of Brothers’: the shockingly realistic World War II miniseries by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg was first broadcast in 2001 on the American channel HBO, which was later also responsible for ‘Game Of Thrones ‘. ‘The Mandalorian’, in turn, is the latest of the top-ranked series – the ‘Star Wars’ series started in 2019 on the Disney+ streaming service.
Finally, a few comments about the creation of the list: All average ratings are rounded to the second decimal place. As with the reviews from the editors of FILMSTARTS, all users can give ratings between 0.5 (poor) and 5 stars (masterpiece). Only series with at least a four-digit number of ratings were considered.
