22 MPs from their own faction also voted in favor of a corresponding resolution late Tuesday evening (local time). The 47-year-old is accused, among other things, of spreading false stories in connection with the terrorist attack by the Islamist Hamas on October 7 and of calling for the destruction of the state of Israel.

The vote in the emotional debate was 234 against 188 votes. The complaint has no practical consequences. But it is a rare measure that is just one step away from exclusion from the House. The resolution was introduced by Republican Rep. Rich McCormick of Georgia.

Tlaib denied the allegations. She has always criticized the Israeli government, but not the Israeli people. She pointed out that calls for a ceasefire were growing louder. You can reprimand them, but you can’t silence these demands, she said.

Tlaib was born in Detroit to Palestinian immigrants and has family in the West Bank. In November 2018, she was first elected to Congress for the Democrats, the party of President Joe Biden. After the Hamas attack, according to media reports, she accused Israel of using its “apartheid system” to provoke violence. She also uses the slogan ‘From the river to the sea’ on social media. What is meant is that Palestine should extend from the Jordan to the Mediterranean. This amounts to a call for violence to destroy Israel, the debate said.

On the X platform (formerly Twitter), Tlaib wrote that she is the only American of Palestinian descent in the US Congress and that her perspective is needed more than ever. “I will not allow myself to be silenced and my words distorted,” she added.
