Israeli troops have penetrated deep into the Gaza Strip. Gaza City is surrounded. On Monday evening, army spokesman Daniel Hagari said ground troops had already been deployed to Gaza City and were increasing pressure there.
According to the Israeli army, the Gaza Strip was also divided in two. “Today there is the northern Gaza Strip and the southern Gaza Strip,” says Hagari. This is an “important phase” in Israel’s war against militant Hamas.
Satellite images from early November show the dividing line: several Israeli positions can be seen southwest of Gaza City, between the border with Israel and the Mediterranean Sea, Sky News reports. For legal reasons, Blick cannot show satellite images from a commercial provider.
According to the report, there are at least six Israeli army bases along the seven-kilometer stretch between the border and the Mediterranean Sea. Tanks, armored vehicles and bulldozers can also be seen on the satellite images. The first location is less than a kilometer from the Israeli border. The furthest point of the advance from Israel is about 500 meters from the Mediterranean Sea.
The Israeli army is encouraging civilians in the Gaza Strip to flee south. More than 1.5 million residents of the coastal strip may have fled their homes since the October 7 Hamas massacre in Israel that left more than 1,400 dead and the subsequent Israeli military action, according to a UN estimate. More than 10,000 Palestinians were killed during that period, according to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip.
According to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (74), Israel will assume responsibility for security in the Gaza Strip indefinitely. “We have seen what happens when we don’t have it,” Netanyahu said in an interview with US broadcaster ABC when asked who should govern the territory after the end of the Gaza war. “Because if we don’t control security, Hamas terror will break out on a scale we cannot imagine.”
The Muslim world and especially the neighboring states of the Palestinian territories fear a permanent expulsion of people from the Gaza Strip. The border crossings therefore remain closed.
Jordan has already drawn a ‘red line’ in this regard several times. Attempts to expel Palestinians from the Gaza Strip or the West Bank will be seen as a “declaration of war” by the kingdom, Jordanian Prime Minister Damit al-Khasawneh, 54, said on Monday, according to the state news agency Petra.
