About six months after the arson on emergency services in a high-rise building in Ratingen (D), North Rhine-Westphalia, the trial against suspect Frank P.* (57) starts on November 24. The regional court in Düsseldorf has admitted the prosecutor’s complaint to the main hearing, a court spokeswoman announced on Monday. The Public Prosecution Service in Düsseldorf accuses the man of nine attempted murders, serious bodily harm and particularly serious arson.
According to the complaint, a police officer and her colleague and seven other rescue workers were called to the apartment in the high-rise building on May 11. There was a suspicion that there might be a helpless person in the apartment. The emergency services therefore used force to open the door, which was barricaded from the inside.
When he entered, the suspect allegedly poured several liters of gasoline in the direction of the police officer. As she ran away, he allegedly threw a burning piece of cloth after her. An explosive ignition occurred, with flames filling areas of the apartment entrance and arcade.
Other emergency services present were caught up in the fire. Some of the injured suffered serious burns. For some, their lives were in danger. The process was initially expected to last until mid-January. (nad/AFP)
