Self-appointed moral guardians, extreme worldviews and insults: According to several reports, radicalization in Viennese schools is increasingly becoming a major problem. “We have been warning for years about escalations of violence in compulsory schools in Vienna,” teachers union member Thomas Krebs told “heute.at”.

“We are increasingly confronted with students who bring political or religious extremist views to school and who reject and mock our values and our rule of law,” Krebs explains.

Anti-Semitic and misogynistic behavior

So-called ‘moral guardians’ would establish their own parallel authorities in schools, for example by controlling girls’ clothing or demanding the establishment of prayer rooms. In particular, anti-Semitic and misogynistic behavior, as well as the disregard for civil liberties and the rejection of state institutions, are “extremely worrying.”

Fear of cancer: “The young people could end up in gang crime at some point.” He knows this from teachers and school directors who are confronted with the problem every day.

Female teachers are not taken seriously because of their gender

Teachers and directors are increasingly insulted or threatened – or not accepted because of their gender. Likewise, people are at risk of being attacked because of their sexual orientation or disabilities, Krebs explains.

According to the expert, such situations occur often: they are not isolated cases. Yet in recent years, politicians have only watched. Politicians must take action now: schools cannot solve the problem alone. (An)
