“Putin is dead” – this message always manages to go viral on social media. It was once said to be cancer, then Parkinson’s disease, and recently the Russian head of state was said to have died of a heart attack. At the same time, rumors continue to circulate about alleged Putin lookalikes supposedly taking over his position.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denies rumors about the Russian president’s death that persist on social media. It is the second time in a very short time that the Kremlin official has had to dismiss rumors about Putin’s health.
The Kremlin is probably adding fuel to the fire and really getting the rumor mill going.
Anyone who takes a look at the Telegram channel ‘SVR General’ gets a completely different picture: it initially claims that Putin’s health has deteriorated drastically. Last week there was even an update that an attempted coup would take place in Russia. Soon after, news broke that the president had “died at his residence in Valdai.” At 8:42 p.m. Moscow time, doctors stopped resuscitation measures and declared him dead, it was said.
Explosive: According to media reports, an insider from the Russian power center is hiding behind the Telegram channel. Namely a retired lieutenant general who uses the code name ‘Viktor Mikhailovich’, writes the ‘Kyiv Post’. He therefore has close ties to Putin’s inner circle.
The Kremlin-affiliated Telegram channel in question further claimed that the treating doctors were held by Putin’s security staff in the room with “Putin’s body” while Russian officials discussed how to “maintain the current regime and install Putin’s lookalikes.” Kremlin spokesman Peskov subsequently classified this report as “an absurd falsification of information.”
The Ukrainian secret service has its own theory about this.
According to a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Military Intelligence Service (HUR), there is a Kremlin campaign behind the Putin rumor mill: dead or not. In other words: Russia itself orchestrates the false news about Putin’s alleged death, says HUR spokesperson Andriy Yusov in an interview with NV Radio.
Reason: Putin could see how Russians react to such a message – from the common people to the elite. “This would indeed be good news, but it is only a message from the anonymous Russian Telegram channels,” the Kyiv Post quoted HUR spokesman Yusov as saying.
In other words, Putin is spreading these false reports about his death and alleged lookalikes so that the Kremlin boss can find out how his own supposed allies are reacting to the news of his death. But also the media, certain Russian elites and even individuals on social platforms, Yusov explains.
“In this way, the empire, which is built around its security apparatus, learns to continue to keep things under control,” says the HUR spokesperson. He emphasizes that Kremlin spokesman Peskov is regularly asked to respond publicly to the rumors. For Yusov it is clear: “It is clear that this is part of a specific plan.”
