Like a number of other heads of state and government, the monarch will give a speech at the start of the negotiations, Buckingham Palace announced in London on Wednesday. Charles, who has been committed to protecting the environment for decades, also participated as Crown Prince at the 2021 COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland.
However, after his accession to the throne in September 2022, he did not travel to the World Climate Conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt last year. Then Prime Minister Liz Truss reportedly objected to his participation.
The short-term conservative head of government was skeptical of her predecessor Boris Johnson’s promises to make the British economy climate neutral. Charles III instead hosted a reception with around 200 international representatives of business, NGOs and other key players in Sharm el-Sheikh two days before the start of negotiations.
On Wednesday, Charles III used. a visit to the UN office in the Kenyan capital Nairobi to call for unity in the fight against the climate crisis. Global warming and species extinction are “challenges that threaten us all and that only society as a whole can meet by working together in a spirit of action, partnership and commitment,” the British king stressed.
The UN climate conference will take place from November 30 to December 12. Following the opening ceremony on the first day, heads of state and government from around the world will meet in Dubai on December 1 and 2 and present their climate policy direction in speeches to the plenary session.
