A new case of youth violence shocks Germany.

The images that appeared online on Friday are almost unbearable: a girl (13) in Neubrandenburg, Germany, was beaten, kicked, threatened and insulted by a youth gang. The perpetrators filmed the actions and several witnesses observed the altercation, but received no help. Now the victim’s mother has spoken to “Bild”.

Her daughter Maya** no longer dares to leave the house and does not want to go to school, says Anna W.*. “A girl wanted to apologize, but my daughter refused because she doesn’t know what comes after the apology,” says a stunned W. “She has been beaten up by them before. An apology can’t make up for this.”

“Don’t look away!”

She has no sympathy for the adult witnesses who walked past the scene unmoved despite Maya’s cries for help. She had expected more moral courage from the residents of Neubrandenburg. “Don’t look away, help the children. Maybe they were afraid themselves. But just keep walking, looking away, that is not possible.” It becomes clear: “We must protect our children!”

It is clear to W. that the act of violence cannot remain without consequences. “I would like to see the penalty limit reduced. At that age, children know very well what they are doing. And that must be punished,” she says. Because the perpetrators are minors between the ages of 11 and 13, it is unlikely that they will face criminal consequences. This is despite the fact that serious bodily harm and threats are being investigated.

Violence in Neubrandenburg

She has a message for Maya’s tormentors, who tormented the 13-year-old for more than an hour: “There were fights when I was young too. But if someone was on the ground, it was over.” She also appeals to possible imitators: “Don’t copy it!”

According to the police, the victim and perpetrator knew each other. They are said to have voluntarily agreed to meet each other last Sunday. Then there was violence. (no)
