Former deputy María Corina Machado assured this Monday, minutes after learning she had won Sunday’s opposition primary in Venezuela, which will remove President Nicolás Maduro from power in 2024, when the election she hopes to run despite being disqualified from doing so will be held.
“In 2024, we will win those presidential elections, we will rally and we will throw out Nicolás Maduro and his regime and we will begin the reconstruction of our nation,” said the 56-year-old politician in her first speech as the standard-bearer of anti-Chavisism for the elections in the second half of next year, with no defined date yet.
He announced that he plans to “build a civic organization that has never been seen in history so that every vote counts” and thus put an end to Chavismo’s 24 years in power.
“Venezuela broke down all barriers and this was an avalanche of citizens that united our country,” he said of the primary in which he received 93.13% of the vote, according to the first official bulletin, based on 26.06% of the votes counted.
The former deputy said that she is ready to break down “obstacles”, “attacks” and unfavorable “forecasts”, as she did in the internal elections, and announced the start of a management project to “prepare the house”, which – she says – she will move to in case taking over the Presidency.
“There are no rest days here, these will be the brightest and most glorious days in our history because these are the days in which this force will continue to grow until we achieve our purpose.” she insisted, drawing applause from supporters listening to her on a stage located in eastern Caracas.
In July last year, the Supervisory Office indicated that the disqualification imposed on Machado in 2015, which was then said to last for a year, would be extended until 2030, so that the former deputy would not be able to hold elected office, unless the sanction was lifted.
