“Major, unacceptable mistake”: Belgian Justice Minister resigns after terrorist attack in Brussels

class=”sc-29f61514-0 icZBHN”>

Van Quickenborne, the Belgian Minister of Justice, has resigned.

The Belgian Minister of Justice, Vincent Van Quickenborne, announced his resignation on Friday evening. He justified this with a “gross and unacceptable error”.

The dismissal follows new findings about the attack on Swedish football fans in Brussels. A Tunisian killed two men. It came out on Friday: Tunisia is said to have already drawn up an extradition request for the attacker last year. However, this “was omitted,” Quickenborne said at the press conference.

The fact that Tunisia’s extradition request submitted on August 15, 2022 was not processed by the responsible judge is an individual, monumental and unacceptable mistake with dramatic consequences, according to Van Quickenborne. He takes political responsibility for this.

Abdesalem L. was aware

It initially remained unclear on Friday why the extradition request was not processed by the judge. According to the justice department, 31 international extradition requests were submitted to this judge last year. 30 he worked on, except that of the later murderer.

Two Swedish fans were killed in an attack on the sidelines of a European Football Championship qualifying match between Belgium and Sweden on Monday evening. The Islamist terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the crime. The attacker, a Tunisian named Abdesalem L., was then shot dead by police on Tuesday. According to Italian authorities, it had been known since 2016 that he was an Islamist. (madam/SDA)
