Mother Natalie had to make a difficult decision in the shelter: how were her children to die?

Natalie, 37, is hiding in the shelter with her husband Shay and their children Negev (8) and Rotem (6) when Hamas terrorists storm their home in Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7. The bunker is adjacent to the daughter’s bedroom.

Her husband initially goes outside with the gun and starts a firefight with the terrorists, the mother tells ‘Bild’. After 40 minutes he returns to the shelter and wants to continue fighting. She told him she would be widowed and that the children would grow up without their father if he left, she told the newspaper.

Unbearably hot in the bunker

Shay stays in the shelter and guards the door with the gun. It is unbearably hot, the room is airtight and the air conditioning is off because the Hamas terrorists have cut off the power.

Natalie puts the kids under the bed and wraps them in blankets to protect them from dirt. The terrorists shoot at the bunker door. It becomes clear to Natalie and Shay: they have to make a decision.

She tells ‘Bild’: ‘I asked my husband in English and very calmly if he had any bullets in his gun,’ says Natalie. Then she makes a terrible decision. And tells him. “If we can’t keep them out, take the gun and shoot us, and then you, it’s better this way. He was quiet for a few minutes and then said yes,” says Natalie.

A woman plunders her apartment

She made this decision because she did not want her children to suffer – or even be kidnapped to Gaza. She held her children close and told them that they would all stay together. But it doesn’t go to the extreme.

Meanwhile, two men and a woman plunder their apartment. The woman took her clothes, her underwear and her sunglasses. Her credit card was also charged. Israeli soldiers finally free the family.

Natalie is shocked, she tells “Bild”. “I always convinced myself that women were not capable of such things, that they were big, bad men who committed such acts, but there were civilians, women,” says Natalie. “It broke my heart how she sang in my house while my children lay in terror in the shelter under the bed.” (neo)
