China’s law enforcement agency has arrested the former director of the State Bank of China on suspicion of taking bribes. Chinese state media reported this on Monday.

Liu Liange is also accused of illegally granting loans. The Chinese Communist Party’s disciplinary committee announced at the end of March that it would be investigating the 62-year-old. On October 7, the supervisory body announced that the former party secretary had been expelled from the Communist Party.

Liu, a senior party member and former key figure in the financial sector, is once again embroiled in the ongoing anti-corruption campaign. In 2012, state and party leader Xi Jinping declared war on “flies and tigers” – a metaphorical way of identifying corrupt party cadres, large and small.

The disciplinary committee reports almost daily on investigations against people in the party, which has approximately 98 million members. Mostly it is about the ongoing problem of corruption.

According to state media, authorities have been investigating eight other high-ranking managers of state-owned banks since March. In January, the disciplinary committee referred to its fight against corruption in areas where there is a high concentration of power and money.
