Zohar Rokah (23) and Liron Arad (24) were recently in love, a happy couple. However, on Saturday evening the two had to experience unimaginable things. When Hamas fighters stormed the Nova festival site near the Gaza border, Rokah knew the attackers would rape her. So she asked her friend to shoot her – before the militants did the worst thing she could imagine.
In an interview with ‘Bild’, the couple reported on the horror that took place on the festival site at dawn. “We have been looking forward to this festival for weeks, it should be the highlight of the year,” they say. “But it ended worse than any nightmare.”
Flashback: It was shortly after dawn when the Hamas fighters rushed to the festival site. When they saw the approaching attackers, they immediately ran to the car and drove away, the couple recalled. Just when they were in a celebratory mood, they were now in a fight for survival. As they fled, they were suddenly surrounded by the fighters: “They looked me straight in the eye. I yelled at Liron and said they were going to shoot us.”
Arad then steered the car into the vastness of the adjacent desert and fully pressed the accelerator. “They shot after us.” The couple eventually managed to avoid the fighters and fled to the home of a strange family. “We were so afraid that Hamas would find us,” they tell “Bild”. The young woman knew how this could end for her. ‘What they plan to do to women is worse than death. That’s why I asked Liron to shoot me in the head if Hamas came.” Her friend thought: “If they find us, I will kill my friend. Because I would rather her die than what these barbarians will do to her.”
Back home, Rokah and Arad decided to join the Israeli army. They are currently in northern Israel, as they told “Bild”. While Arad wants to fight on the front, his girlfriend will work in the strategic background. The young couple wants to get their kidnapped friends back. (An)
