This weekend the world audience looked at Israel as if it were paralyzed. Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip overran Israeli territory and killed or kidnapped hundreds of people. At the same time they bombed cities with thousands of rockets. Israel’s massive security apparatus seemed unprepared, and even Hamas seemed “surprised” by its own success in the horrific attack.
Research by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) now shows that the Hamas terrorists were able to prepare meticulously for the attack. The newspaper writes that fighters “carried detailed maps of cities and military bases.” The documents, written in Arabic, were found with the dead attackers, and some documents were also left on the street.
According to the WSJ, the documents indicate that Hamas was targeting more than just military targets. Instead, the attacks were carried out with the clear aim of attacking civilian targets and taking hostages. A fourteen-page document describes a precise plan to attack Kibbutz Mefalsim and kidnap its residents. The document was created in June.
The plan shows how detailed the terrorists planned their attack. Accordingly, a specific team had to cut holes in a security fence, while others had to systematically search the village. Another team would have to engage in a possible battle with the Israeli army, whose position is “about three to five minutes away.” The document also states when exactly the Israeli army conducts its inspection tours and which commander is on duty at what times.
Mefalsim was even attacked on Saturday. However, the residents managed to repel the attack. In other places, however, countless people were kidnapped or murdered.
“This plan shows how systematic Hamas was. Possible groups of people, synagogues and kindergartens were marked on the maps. They were prepared – down to the last detail,” former Israeli security official Eyal Pinko told the WSJ.
Israeli medics also published Arabic-language notes on Telegram with information about the Israeli army’s equipment. The multiple-folded piece of paper contains images of all Israeli tanks and their weak points. This describes from what distance and with what weapon a specific tank must be shot at in order to efficiently put it out of action.
However, it remains unclear why Israel failed to notice these preparations. According to a CNN report, some Hamas fighters trained in various scenarios in December 2022 – in open areas and less than two kilometers from the Israeli border.
In the video, Hamas ‘trains’ how to take hostages or fire rocket launchers. The Israeli military told CNN that Hamas has “many training areas.” The research results are “nothing new”.
