Kibbutz Be’eri massacre: 108 bodies have been recovered so far – one in ten residents dead.

Just over 1,000 people live in Kibbutz Be’eri. It is located only about five kilometers from the border with the Gaza Strip and is known for its well-maintained green spaces. There is a printing press here and, according to the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, an emerging cultural scene.

But since Saturday everything has changed: video footage shows heavily armed Hamas fighters invading the kibbutz, ransacking homes, and shooting or kidnapping anyone who is Israeli.

“They shot around indiscriminately”

Footage shows the terrorists shooting people in their cars and then searching their belongings for valuables. “They walked around Be’eri as if they owned it,” Haim Jelin, a kibbutz survivor, told a radio station.

“They shot around indiscriminately, kidnapped whoever they could, set fire to people’s houses so that they had to escape through the window where the terrorists were waiting,” Jelin said.

He does not know how many victims the massacre claimed. Now rescuers have announced an initial number. 108 bodies have already been recovered, ten percent of the residents are dead, but the search is not over yet and more deaths are expected.

Adi Efrat is one of the survivors of the horrors of Be’eri. She tells “Ynet” how two men captured her; she was only wearing a bathrobe when they broke into her house. They took her and took her to another house where she was handcuffed.

“They shot them in the head.”

Efrat says: “They brought a mother with her son, she was covered in blood and trembling all over. She told me that her husband and baby were dead.” Efrat then wanted to calm them down and said that maybe they were not dead. To which the mother replied: “They shot them in the head.”

Israeli woman says she was unable to hug her grieving mother because of the handcuffs. So she laid her head on her shoulder and they cried together.

Finally, Efrat is taken away by the Hamas fighters. Shortly afterwards, Israeli troops arrive and she is released. She doesn’t know what happened to the mother she cried with. She says: “It’s a miracle I survived.” (neo)
