There is always war in the Gaza Strip: there have been so many clashes between Israel and Hamas

After the massive attacks on Israel by the radical Islamic Palestinian movement Hamas, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (73) has vowed a “long and difficult war” on the Israelis. In recent years, Israel and the radical Palestinian movements Hamas and Islamic Jihad have repeatedly been involved in armed conflicts.

On December 27, 2008, Israel launched the large-scale air offensive “Cast Lead” to counter continued rocket fire from the Gaza Strip, which has been under the control of the radical Islamist Hamas movement since 2007.

On January 3, 2009, Israeli ground forces invaded the coastal strip. The conflict ends with a ceasefire on January 18.

The fighting kills 1,440 Palestinians and 13 Israelis. In a report, Amnesty International later accused both Israel and Hamas of “war crimes.”

The Israeli military operation ‘Pillar of Defense’ began on November 14, 2012 with the targeted killing of Hamas commander Ahmed Jaabari in Gaza. During the eight-day operation, 177 Palestinians, including about a hundred civilians, were killed in hundreds of airstrikes and massive rocket fire. Six people are killed on the Israeli side, including four civilians.

The Israeli military says it has hit 1,500 targets, including 19 command centers. More than 900 rockets fired from the Gaza Strip reach Israel and more than 400 others are intercepted. The Essedin al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s armed wing, alone claim to have fired more than 1,500 rockets.

On July 8, 2014, Israel launched the military operation ‘Protective Edge’ to end rocket fire and destroy tunnels dug from the Gaza Strip into Israel. On August 26, after fifty days of war, Israel and Hamas reach an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire agreement.

The Gaza Strip has been devastated after heavy fighting. According to the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs, nearly 55,000 homes are affected by Israeli attacks and at least 17,200 homes are partially or completely destroyed. On the Palestinian side there are 2,251 deaths, most of them civilians. Israel has suffered 74 deaths, almost all of them soldiers.

Hamas fires rockets on May 10, 2021, in “solidarity” with hundreds of Palestinians injured in clashes with Israeli police on the Temple Mount and around the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

Israel then launches the military operation ‘Guardians of the Walls’ to ‘reduce’ Hamas’ military capacity through massive air strikes. Within eleven days, the Palestinian organizations Hamas and Islamic Jihad fired more than 4,300 rockets. 90 percent of projectiles are intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense shield.

At least 232 Palestinians will be killed in Israeli airstrikes until an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire takes effect. Twelve people were killed in rocket attacks on the Israeli side.

In May 2023, violence flared up again – with five days of fighting between Israel and the second radical Palestinian organization in the Gaza Strip, Islamic Jihad. Israeli strikes kill at least six leading members of Islamic Jihad, which is classified as a terrorist organization by the US and EU. A total of 33 people die in the Gaza Strip and two in Israel. Egypt agrees to another ceasefire. (ced/AFP)
