It’s a phrase that flashes through many people’s minds as soon as they wake up: “Only five more minutes.” As soon as you say it internally, your thumb hits the snooze button and you sink back into bed.
This scenario is at least familiar to people who have difficulty getting out of bed in the morning. Anyone who feels like a target should urgently stop. According to American researchers, snoozing robs the body of an enormous amount of energy.
Pressing the snooze button is therefore particularly problematic, because you only have to lie in bed for five to ten minutes before the alarm clock wakes you up again. This is very confusing for the body, according to the experts at the American Sleep Clinic Service (SCS).
In addition, during slumber, hormones are released in the brain that normally help you fall into a deep sleep.
Instead of hitting the snooze button, experts say you should set your alarm ten minutes later and force yourself to get up right away.
If you can’t bring yourself to do it, you risk what’s known as sleep inertia. This is comparable to a special feeling of dizziness that becomes noticeable upon and shortly after waking up. In extreme cases, this feeling can last for hours.
Experts encourage people to listen to their internal clock when it comes to sleep. Ideally, you go to bed when you are tired and get up again when your body has had enough sleep.
However, this is often not possible. To achieve the best possible sleep rhythm, the researchers recommend purchasing an analog alarm clock without a snooze option or placing the alarm clock a few meters away from the bed so that you have to get up. (dzc)
