A woman in Russia lived for 80 years with a three-centimeter needle in her brain, but she never had a headache. Doctors discovered the foreign body during a computed tomography scan, the health authority of the Sakhalin region in the Russian Far East announced on Wednesday. But how did the needle get into her head?

Doctors believe the woman’s long-deceased parents may be to blame. They suspect that the parents tried to kill their child immediately after birth. “Such cases were not unusual in years of famine,” the health authority said.

The needle must remain in the head

During World War II, food was scarce throughout the Soviet Union. Hunger and abject poverty may also have led the woman’s parents to decide to kill their newborn baby with a needle. But even though the needle penetrated the left parietal lobe of her brain, the woman survived the murder attempt.

The patient reportedly never complained of headaches as a result of her injury. Fearing her condition will worsen, doctors do not want to attempt to remove the needle. “Your condition is being monitored by the attending physician,” the authority continued. (AFP/Mrs)
