The Earth’s land mass rises an average of 840 meters above sea level. However, only 40 countries exceed this average level.
In three countries, life takes place at an average altitude of over 3,000 meters. They are these Bhutan, Nepal And Tajikistan. The first country with a sea connection in this ranking is Chiliwhich rises through the high mountains of the Andes to a height of 1,871 meters above sea level.
The Switzerland follows in 17th place, making it the second highest European country. The average distance of 1350 meters is covered only by Andorra (1996 meters).
Bhutan is on average the highest country in the world. The small state in the Himalayas is on average 15 meters higher than Nepal.
There was little missing from the top spot, but Nepal has Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, on its territory.
Tajikistan is the third country with an average altitude of over 3,000 meters above sea level. And it probably has the largest national flag in the world.
Tajikistan's northern neighbor barely passed the 3,000 meters and thus missed the podium.
The first country outside Asia. The small African state of Lesotho is not called the 'kingdom in heaven' for nothing.
The first European country is in 6th place: Andorra. The mini-state in the Pyrenees is approaching the 2000 meter limit.
Back to Asia. Afghanistan has an average altitude of 1,885 meters above sea level, the capital Kabul at 1,791 meters above sea level.
The first landlocked country: Chile. In the narrow strip of land you can travel from 0 to over 4500 meters above sea level in just a few hours. But be careful: this can cause pressure on your ears.
The next country with a coast. And between the lowest point (-154 m) and the highest (8848 m) there is a height difference of no less than 9002 meters. No country can top that.
Armenia barely makes the top 10. But Mount Ararat in the photo below is already in Turkey.
Guinea-Bissau, with the Bissagos archipelago and its 88 islands in the Atlantic Ocean, is hardly among the ten lowest-lying countries.
Senegal has a maximum height of 648 meters, making it clearly the highest point of the ten lowest countries on its territory.
The dwarf state of Vatican City has only an area of 0.44 km²2 and is located at an altitude between 33 and 75 meters above sea level.
Estonia has one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe, Tallinn. But the land is not high. By the way, it shares space with the Vatican.
And another shared space. Gambia, the narrow strip of land to the left and right of the river of the same name...
... and Denmark both have an average of 34 meters above sea level. Denmark is one of two countries on this list that also has areas below sea level.
The same applies to the Netherlands. Some areas are up to seven meters above sea level. The highest point is the Vaalserberg (323 meters). However, this only takes into account all places on the European mainland and the existing islands.
In Qatar, the football players at the 2022 World Cup will certainly not have to complain about the thin air like in Mexico in 1970.
We've already reached the silver lining: Singapore. The island state is only 15 meters above sea level on average.
Clearly in first place: the Maldives. The approximately 1,200 islands have hardly any height differences. The World Factbook places the country's highest point on the 8th hole of a golf course at five meters (Mount Villingili) above sea level. Various other sources mention 2.40 meters as the highest point. Regardless, no one disputes the country's top position. The short documentary about climbing the highest point in the country is also worthwhile.
