Despite the warm autumn weather, the start of the season for top skiers is getting closer. You are in the final phase of preparation. The first two races of the winter will take place at the end of October: the giant slalom in Sölden (Austria).

As photos from ORF show, not much of this can be seen on the Rettenbach Glacier so far. The slope is not yet visible, there is only a little snow on the rocks. Although it is difficult to imagine that this will change in the next three weeks, the current situation is not a cause for concern for the organizers. And this despite the fact that the temperatures in Sölden almost exceeded ten degrees.

60,000 cubic meters of snow in the depot

After renovation work was required, which involved the use of excavators to remove protruding rocks in the upper part of the stretch, work on the slope will soon begin. Since spring, approximately 60,000 cubic meters of snow have been stored in depots. A new snowmaking system will also be used this year. The World Cup track will be constructed soon.

“We can save a lot of snow, we can save a lot of electricity. We can work faster with the snow cannons, maybe we will be ready within two days,” race director Rainer Gstrein told ORF. This also makes us more climate-friendly than in recent years.

The countdown to the new ski season has begun. Snow checks will take place in Sölden between October 17 and 21. Once everything is ready and the organizers agree, nothing will stand in the way of the two giant slaloms. The women will compete on October 28. A day later, Marco Odermatt (25) chases a hat trick.
