Turkey launches new attacks on the PKK in northern Iraq after the attack Bus accident in Venice: 2 workers save little girl from the flames

A few days after an attack by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the capital Ankara, the Turkish air force has again attacked targets in northern Iraq. The Defense Ministry in Ankara said the Qandil Mountains, where the PKK has its headquarters, were bombed on Wednesday evening. More than twenty targets were destroyed, including shelters and weapons depots. In addition, numerous PKK fighters were put out of action – which usually means they were killed. The bombings were, among other things, a response to Sunday’s attack; they appealed to the right of self-defense.

On Sunday, two police officers were injured in a suicide bombing outside the Interior Ministry in Ankara. Another attacker was killed in a gun battle. The PKK claimed responsibility for the attack and Turkish authorities later identified the attackers as PKK members. Immediately after the attack, the army carried out airstrikes in northern Iraq.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization in Turkey, Europe and the US. Tens of thousands of people have died in the decades-long conflict with the Turkish state. A peace process failed in 2015. (sda/dpa)
