Bellingham does it like Haaland: suddenly world-class

With a goal and an assist, Jude Bellingham (20) leads Real Madrid to the next three points at the foot of Mount Vesuvius in Naples. For the young midfielder, goal contributions are number ten and eleven in his ninth appearance for the Royals! “King Jude” has taken Madrid by storm – just as Erling Haaland (23) took Manchester a year ago.

Just like the Englishman this summer, the Norwegian left BVB last year as top team for a terrible sum and made an immediate impression. Haaland had thirteen goals and one assist in his first nine games for the Skyblues. The two exceptional talents are not familiar with adjustment problems in one of the biggest teams in the world or struggling with the higher pressure.

Deserves the title of world class

They had hoped for this in Madrid and Manchester, but they could not have expected such a development. No matter how talented a player is, being a top player at Dortmund is not the same as being at Real Madrid or Manchester City.

Another ex-Borussia player is the best example: Jadon Sancho (23) was a star in Dortmund. In 2021, Manchester United paid 85 million for his services. Sportingly, he performed below expectations and has now been suspended after a public row with coach Erik ten Haag.

Completely diametrically opposed to Haaland or Bellingham. Haaland’s goals – 52 in all competitions in his first season – played a key role in winning the treble for the first time. Meanwhile, in Madrid, Bellingham equaled two of Cristiano Ronaldo’s starting records from midfield, becoming the first player since CR7 2009 to score in his first four LaLiga games for Real. Cristiano Ronaldo also recently scored twice in two Champions League matches for Real.

Akanji also grabbed the cross

Less glamorous, but no less impressive, is the development of Manuel Akanji (28). The Swiss national team player was labeled as a 20 million stopgap for City’s defense and became an undisputed regular under Pep Guardiola. Whoever scores the most playing minutes in what many experts believe is currently the best team in the world, is just as deserving of the world-class title as his more spectacular (former) teammates Haaland and Bellingham.
