Given the tense situation in Kosovo, Romania has announced the deployment of around 100 soldiers to the former Serbian province. Bucharest is adding a “company-level contingent” to the KFOR peacekeeping force, Romanian Ambassador to NATO Dan Necalescu said on Tuesday on the online service formerly known as Twitter to station the KFOR.
A week ago on Sunday, the worst incident in the region in years took place in northern Kosovo. An attack on a police patrol left a police officer dead. Later, about thirty armed men barricaded themselves in a Serbian Orthodox monastery in the village of Banjska. Three armed Serbs were killed during a shootout with police.
The vast majority of Kosovo’s 1.8 million inhabitants are ethnic Albanians. There are also 120,000 Serbs who live mainly in the north of the country. In 2008, Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia, but Belgrade does not recognize this. (sda/afp)
