Search for exhausted man: Five hikers refused help to a lost senior

It should have been a beautiful trip: On Monday a man (79) and his wife (76) took the Gosaukamm cable car to the Zwieselalm, a meadow in the Salzkammergut. There the two took a short walk.

The two reached the Gablonzer hut around noon. But the eldest couldn’t have enough and wanted to walk to the neighboring Törleck, just 80 meters from the hut.

The two agreed to meet at the cabin. The man left, but got lost along the way and couldn’t find his way back. When he still had not returned around 3 p.m., the woman raised the alarm. The man did not have a mobile phone with him.

Not understood or ignored

But as the senior later told the Krone, he knew his wife’s cell phone number. That’s why he approached hikers he met along the way and asked if he could borrow their cell phones.

But one said no, one didn’t understand him, two ignored him and one allegedly said he had a new cell phone that he didn’t want to give away.

In the meantime, a large-scale search operation had already been launched, involving several mountain rescue services. The search was also attended by a farmer who saw the police helicopter “Dragonfly” buzzing above the alpine pasture.

When he saw a man wandering around, he called emergency services, who eventually found the senior. Slightly hypothermic, exhausted – but unharmed. He was eventually flown back to Lake Gosause by helicopter.
