Matt Gaetz is the son of a wealthy and influential family in Florida. In 2010, he joined Congress from Florida, and in 2017 he made the leap to the national stage and has since served in the House of Representatives, where he is a member of the Freedom Caucus, the far-right wing of the Grand Old Party.
Gaetz is not even particularly popular within his own party. He is the prototype of a rich man’s boy who not only allows himself a lot, but also brags about it. His father once had to save him due to a FIAZ violation, which did not stop the young Gaetz from denouncing Hunter Biden’s drug addiction particularly vehemently.
With sexual boasts, Gaetz even insults his party members – especially his fellow party members. During the convention in Tallahassee, the capital of Florida, he belonged to a men’s club that determined who had slept with the most women. In Washington he passed on nude photos on his smartphone. In 2021, it was announced that an investigation had been launched against Gaetz on suspicion of sexual abuse and drug use. For a while, even Fox News kept its hands off him.
This procedure has now been stopped. Gaetz can rejoin Sean Hannity & Co. and he can do that mainly because he is the loudest of all Donald Trump’s speakers.
To distract from his numerous legal proceedings, the ex-president is trying to cause chaos by any means necessary. Gaetz is a willing assistant. When he voted on the debt ceiling this spring, he pulled out all the stops to prevent it from being raised – as is the rule. If Gaetz had been successful at the time, the US would have become insolvent and the consequences for financial markets and the global economy would have been devastating.
In the absurd dispute over the debt ceiling, Republicans were classically outmaneuvered by President Biden and Hakeem Jeffries, the minority leader in the House of Representatives. Ultimately, Chairman Kevin McCarthy had to give in and even make a deal that anticipated the budget debate.
This infuriated Gaetz and the Freedom Caucus hardliners. They forced McCarthy to go back on his word and demand massive cuts, especially in social services. Due to the precarious majority situation in the House of Representatives, they were initially successful. An administrative shutdown – and therefore completely unnecessary chaos for millions of Americans – seemed to have become inevitable on Saturday evening.
But once again Biden and Jeffries had the better end for themselves. Speaker McCarthy had to cancel the exercise at the last minute and the shutdown has been postponed for at least 45 days. “The MAGA Republicans have surrendered,” Jeffries triumphed after the vote, which was overwhelmingly in favor of the Democrats.
However: the Democrats had to make a promise; Military aid to Ukraine is no longer part of the budget package. But here too the damage is limited. This is primarily a tactical maneuver. Democrats wanted to avoid being accused of putting the well-being of Ukraine above the well-being of their own citizens.
However, Ukraine will most likely continue to rely on American military assistance. Democrats made their approval conditional on McCarthy putting a bill for this aid up for a vote in the coming weeks. This law will certainly be passed by Congress. “I assure our allies, the American people and the Ukrainian people that they can continue to count on our support,” President Biden said. “We’re not going to get into trouble.”
The members of the Freedom Caucus are outraged again. Gaetz now wants to have his own speaker removed. He may want to submit a corresponding motion to the House of Representatives today. McCarthy betrayed them and violated the agreements with the hardliners, Gaetz said. “We therefore have to rip off the band-aid,” he explained on various TV channels on Sunday.
Speaker McCarthy reacts calmly to this threat. In “Dirty Harry style” he responds with the comment: “Bring it on.” (Well, then show what you can do.) Rightly so: there is a good chance that Gaetz will be outsmarted again. He doesn’t seem to realize he’s hitting the wall. Because if McCarthy wants to keep his beloved job as speaker, he must work with the Democrats now. He cannot afford to break his word again.
With his clumsy performance, Gaetz mainly damaged his own party. He has once again weakened the already ailing Republican Speaker. On Fox News, Republican Rep. Carlos Gimenez described Gaetz as “Biden’s most popular Republican.”
Therefore, Gaetz’s frenzy can best be described by Shakespeare’s Macbeth: “Full of sounds and fury that mean nothing.”
