“The taste has a strong medicinal character”: Almost 200 year old whiskey discovered by chance in a cellar

A good wine from the 19th century is being auctioned.

An almost 200-year-old whiskey is being auctioned in Scotland. It lay undiscovered for years in the basement of a medieval castle. According to auction house Whiskey Auctioneer, the contents of the forty bottles that were rediscovered last year at Blair Castle in Perthshire date back to 1833. Documents confirm this, the British news agency PA quoted the auction house in Perth, Scotland as saying.

A study using radiocarbon methods confirmed that the fine wine dates back to the early 19th century. According to the auction house, this is the oldest Scotch whiskey in the world.

Two dozen of the bottles will now go under the hammer from November 24. According to PA, an expert who was one of the few people allowed to taste the whiskey said the taste was “strongly medicinal in character, without any noticeable or pronounced peat smoke.” (SDA)
