“Total destruction of privacy”: US President Hunter Biden’s son sues Rudy Giuliani in laptop dispute

Hunter Biden is suing Rudy Giuliani for unauthorized access to his laptop.

In the affair over data from his laptop that became public, the son of US President Joe Biden (80) has sued the former private lawyer of ex-President Donald Trump (77), Rudy Giuliani. In the civil lawsuit filed on Tuesday in a federal court in California, Hunter Biden, 53, accuses the former New York mayor of a “total destruction” of his “digital privacy.”

Giuliani and his former lawyer Robert Costello invested “an incredible amount of time and energy” in “seeking, hacking, falsifying, manipulating, copying and distributing data stolen from Biden’s devices,” the lawsuit said. It was almost an obsession.

Hunter Biden accuses Giuliani and Costello of violating a computer fraud law, among other things. The 53-year-old is seeking damages for an undisclosed amount.

Has already caused a stir

The laptop and the documents on it have been in the news repeatedly in recent years. This was the case for the first time in the final phase of the 2020 presidential election between the incumbent Trump and challenger Biden. The New York Post newspaper reported at the time that Giuliani had obtained data from the laptop a few weeks before the election.

E-mails found there should therefore show that Biden used his father’s position for business in Ukraine in 2015, who was then vice president of the US and was responsible for his country’s Ukraine policy. In a TV duel with Biden before the election, Trump spoke of the ‘laptop from hell’.

Copies passed on

The origin of the story goes back to April 2019: Hunter Biden allegedly delivered the laptop to a repair shop in Wilmington, Delaware, but then never picked it up. The store’s owner, Trump supporter John Paul Mac Isaac, then said he made copies of the data stored on the device and passed it on to Giuliani’s then-lawyer Costello.

Since then, emails, documents and intimate photos of Hunter Biden, allegedly from the laptop, have been repeatedly made public. Last March, the president’s son sued the computer store owner as part of a legal counteroffensive.

Impeachment proceedings against Biden initiated

Opposition Republicans have been attacking Hunter Biden for years and trying to do political harm to his father. Republicans in the House of Representatives recently launched an impeachment inquiry against the president. The first impeachment hearing is scheduled for Thursday. Republicans accuse Joe Biden of being involved in his son’s controversial foreign deals. There is no evidence for this yet.

In any case, Hunter Biden has problems with the American legal system: in mid-September he was charged with illegal possession of weapons. He is also under investigation for suspected tax fraud. (AFP/a)
