Nagelsmann, who was somewhat surprisingly released from Bayern Munich during an international break in March, was considered the preferred candidate. However, first his contract with the German record champions, which runs until 2026, had to be terminated. His involvement with the DFB initially dates back to after the European Championship in his own country.
Nagelsmann made his debut as a coach at Hoffenheim in February 2016. At the age of 28, he became the youngest head coach in the history of the Bundesliga. He led the relegation-threatened team to stay in the league and even into the Champions League two years later. From 2019 he also played with RB Leipzig and reached the semi-finals. After these successes, the call came from Munich and Bayern transferred around 20 million transfer fees to Leipzig.
It is a bit of déjà vu for Nagelsmann, because he had already inherited Hansi Flick in 2021. At that time he moved from Bayern Munich to the DFB, but had little success in his new position. Germany failed in the group stage of the World Cup in Qatar, but the rope was only pulled on September 10 after the team lost three games in a row for the first time in forty years.
At the DFB press conference, Nagelsmann explained what he plans to do with the team: “We want to convey an idea that is not complex. We want to support the players.” Nagelsmann said of his time in Bavaria and his six months without a coaching position: “I reflected on my time at FC Bayern. I am happy that I now have the opportunity to correct the mistakes.”
Nagelsmann, who was somewhat surprisingly released from Bayern Munich during an international break in March, was considered the preferred candidate. However, first his contract with the German record champions, which runs until 2026, had to be terminated. According to ‘Bild’, Nagelsmann now earns 400,000 euros per month as a national coach. At Bayern Munich, where his contract runs until 2026, he would have received around 20 million euros by then without lifting a finger. Nagelsmann said at the press conference: “I don’t want credit for giving up money. I am happy that I have been given the trust. This is not about money issues. For me, that’s what matters.”
As part of the press conference, Rudi Völler also commented on Nagelsmann’s predecessor Hansi Flick, who was only recently released: “Hansi Flick’s backpack was already noticeable after he was eliminated from the World Cup. Nevertheless, he is an absolute top coach and he will certainly end up at a top association or top club again.”
Julian Nagelsmann’s focus is mainly on the upcoming European Championships in Germany. He is optimistic: “It is a great privilege for me to go to a European Championship at home as a coach. “Summer fairytale 2.0 would be the ideal idea.”
