Three crew members of a South African Navy submarine were killed in an accident near Cape Town. A fourth person was in critical condition, the South African military said on Wednesday evening. Accordingly, high waves hit seven crew members while the submarine was being loaded by a helicopter at sea on Wednesday afternoon.
The rescue was made difficult by the heavy seas. All seven were eventually recovered. The four survivors and a lifeguard were treated in hospital.
In recent days there have been exceptionally high waves in South Africa with so-called spring tides. Huge waves may occur as part of the current spring floods in the Southern Hemisphere.
According to the South African Weather Service, waves of up to 9.5 meters high were measured, some of which damaged coastal buildings and sent cars flying through parking lots. Accordingly, 50 percent of the country’s coast was affected by the floods. Two people were killed and at least seven injured, the report said. (lacquer/sda/dpa)
