More than 8,000 refugees arrived in Lampedusa in one week.

A state of emergency applies in Lampedusa. Within a week, more than 8,000 refugees arrived on the Mediterranean island – and new boats and ferries from Africa are constantly arriving on the Italian coast. But Italy’s right-wing government wants to put an end to this. Stricter measures should apply to combat irregular migration.

For example, the maximum possible detention pending deportation should be extended by six months. In addition, the cabinet under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (46) ordered the army on Monday to set up special deportation detention centers. According to information from those around her, the ultra-right prime minister said during the meeting that the government was united in its support of the decision.

The maximum duration of detention pending deportation will be increased from twelve to 18 months to allow more time to check the right of residence and, if necessary, to immediately deport people from detention. It said the Defense Ministry should create “structures” to detain migrants who have entered the country illegally.

Meloni wants camps in uninhabited areas

These camps should therefore be set up in sparsely populated areas of the country. This should not lead to “further discomfort and uncertainty in Italian cities,” Meloni continues.

In recent days, thousands of migrants from Africa have landed on boats on the Italian island of Lampedusa in the Mediterranean Sea. The first reception center on the small island between Sicily and North Africa was sometimes extremely overcrowded.

Fight against smugglers

Meloni also declared war on smuggling gangs again. “The fight against illegal mass immigration and human traffickers is an epoch-making battle for Italy and for Europe.”
