Particularly in the states of Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia, temperatures in some areas were 10 to 16 degrees above average values for September, the Australian ‘Guardian’ reported on Monday, citing meteorologists. Sometimes the mercury rose to 37 to 39 degrees. In the metropolitan city of Sydney, too, the values have been around 30 degrees for days – and winter is only just over.
It could become even warmer on Tuesday and Wednesday, says weather service Weatherzone and speaks of an “unprecedented heat wave at the start of the season”.
Experts also warned of possible forest fires. Authorities fear what could be the most violent bushfire season since the devastating ‘Black Summer’ of 2019/2020. During that time, weeks of fires destroyed more than twelve million hectares of land and killed countless animals.
The heat wave is caused by a strong area of high pressure that moves slowly and pushes warm air from northern Australia southward. According to forecasts, it could become considerably cooler from Thursday: a cold front with wind and rain will then move in. (SDA)
