Accordingly, pigs should eat processed poultry proteins and poultry should eat pig proteins. The animals should now also receive insect protein. The food and feed processors involved and the storage facilities must meet strict hygiene requirements.
As the EDI has announced, the EU has allowed feeding with animal proteins again since September 2021. This means that high-quality offal that is not used as food can be better utilized. Processed proteins (egg whites) are very suitable as feed for omnivorous farm animals.
Various proposals in parliament had already called for protein nutrition in advance. According to the EDI, approval is also useful when it comes to sustainable agriculture and food production. The change also creates equivalence with EU law.
Since 2001, Switzerland has banned the feeding of animal meal to all farm animals. The measure is intended to combat mad cow disease, Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE). The consultation on the revised animal by-products regulation and the new use of animal by-products regulation will last until December 15. (SDA)
