Taiwan’s Foxconn Group, the world’s largest manufacturer of electronics and computer components and Apple’s most important partner, wants to significantly expand its activities in India.
On the occasion of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 73rd birthday this weekend, Foxconn’s representative in India, Vincent Lee, wrote on the LinkedIn platform:
Lee provided no details.
Foxconn and other Apple suppliers have manufacturing facilities in India, where government incentives exist for smartphone production. Most Apple products are produced in China. But lately there have been repeated reports that Apple is increasingly looking to diversify its supply chains in light of geopolitical tensions with China – the focus is on India and Vietnam.
The idea of diversifying supply chains is also linked to the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and the corona pandemic, as these events revealed major dependencies.
Foxconn plans to invest another 50 billion rupees ($538 million) in facilities for manufacturing components for iPhones and semiconductors in the Indian state of Karnataka, its industry minister, Mallanagouda Basanagouda Patil, recently announced on the platform X, which was previously called Twitter.
