Donald Trump seems calm about the criminal proceedings. “I did nothing wrong,” says the ex-president.

Former US President Donald Trump (77) has left it unclear whether he would pardon himself if he were convicted and could return to the White House. ‘Oh, I think that’s very unlikely. What did I do wrong? “I did nothing wrong,” Trump said in an interview on NBC News this weekend.

The Republican pointed out that he did not preemptively pardon himself shortly before leaving the White House in January 2021 to protect himself from prosecution. Trump told his advisers at the time: “The last thing I would ever do is forgive myself.”

No third term in sight

There are now four criminal cases against the 77-year-old. He wants to run again for the Republicans in next November’s presidential elections.

He could likely pardon himself if he wins the election after being convicted at the federal level, experts say. But that will likely lead to major political upheavals. If he were convicted at the state level — as he was during the Trump trials in New York and Georgia — he would not be able to pardon himself.

When asked by a journalist whether there was a scenario in which Trump would seek a third term, Trump said “no.” In the United States, a person can serve two four-year terms, either consecutively or not.

In the more than hour-long interview, Trump repeated the lie several times that the 2020 presidential election was stolen and that he was the actual winner – and not Democrat Joe Biden (80).

Republican Trump usually gives interviews to conservative media such as Fox News. The most recent exception was a so-called town hall at CNN, for which the channel, considered liberal, was criticized. NBC is also considered quite liberal. (SDA/bab)
