European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited the pier in the island’s port on Lampedusa, intended for the arrival of migrants. The two politicians stood on the water on Sunday morning surrounded by journalists and visited the place, as shown on images from the television channel RaiNews24. Since the beginning of this week, numerous boat migrants have arrived at the pier – abandoned metal boats that people usually use to cross to Europe are still floating on the water.
More than 8,000 migrants have arrived on the small island between Sicily and North Africa in recent days. Due to its proximity to the Tunisian coastal city of Sfax, Lampedusa has been one of the hotspots of migration to Europe for years. The refugee camp was sometimes extremely overcrowded with 6,800 people. A large number of people have now been transferred from Lampedusa to Sicily or to accommodation on the mainland, but the camp remains overloaded. A state of emergency was declared on Wednesday. (SDA)
