Gavin Newsom (55) is ready if Biden stumbles: a smart man with weaknesses

The Californians always knew: this Gavin Newsom (55) will be something big one day. So far, his positions have taken him from mayor of San Francisco to governor of the US state of California. The next step will probably be the presidency of the United States. If not as a short-term replacement for the increasingly confused Joe Biden (80), then certainly in the 2028 elections.

Vinz Koller (60), who emigrated from Schaffhausen to California in 1986 and was a Democratic voter in the American presidential elections three times, knows this politician who has a great future. “I first met him when I became president of the Democratic Party in Monterey County in 2007 and invited him to our gala evening,” Koller said. They also greeted each other again and again at other festive events.

The telegenic Newsom especially impressed TV people and young women. “Many people came to our events not because of his politics, but because of his charisma,” Koller says. “He shook the stage with his power. Together with current Vice President Kamala Harris, he is one of the big stars in California.”

Stand up to the Republicans

At first, Koller didn’t know if Newsom was just scoring points as “Pretty Boy.” “But I was surprised by its content and format.” He fearlessly stands up to the Republicans – even with some sensational promotional videos – and does not shy away from addressing current topics.

He, who allowed gay marriage as mayor of San Francisco in 2004, stands up for LGBTQ rights, abortion rights, universal health insurance, legalization of marijuana, strict gun laws and more rights for immigrants. And very important for a possible presidential candidate: he can generate campaign funds.

Because of his liberal stance, Newsom is a red flag among Republicans. In 2021, they tried to remove him from his position as governor of California. However, the campaign suffered a colossal failure: in the recall election, the majority of voters voted to remain in office. In the subsequent regular gubernatorial elections, Newsom also clearly won against Republican Senator Brian Dahle (57).

Strong man with weaknesses

However, the radiant man also has Tolggen to his name: in 2007 he admitted to being an alcoholic and apparently underwent successful treatment. During Corona he was criticized for preaching water and drinking wine himself. For example, he, who had imposed strict measures, was caught at a birthday party in a luxurious restaurant. He initially denied this until photos of the event were released.

Catholic, Irish-born Newsom managed to study political science despite his dyslexia. In his book ‘Citizenville’ he writes that to this day he has to rely on audio books and oral summaries. In 2008 he married actress Jennifer Siebel (49), with whom he had four children. He was previously married to TV presenter Kimberly Guilfoyle (54). She has a close bond with Donald Trump (77): she worked for Trump’s home channel Fox and has been in a relationship with Trump’s son Donald Jr. since 2018. (45).

Candidacy probably only for 2028

What if Biden, as the most powerful man in the world, continues to lose perspective and make confusing appearances? It is clear to various American media that Newsom would step into the breach. Koller is also convinced that he has what it takes to become president. However, he does not believe in a candidacy until 2028, because Newsom would make way for incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris (58) in 2024.

The question, however, is whether Democrats would actually let Kamala Harris run against a Republican – probably Donald Trump – if Biden were to resign. The vice president has only a poor track record to show for it so far. Newsom is currently traveling across the US campaigning for Biden. But he probably also has another goal: self-promotion to position himself sooner or later.
