After five fires in Belgian schools in recent days, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo expressed his alarm about the possible connection with protests against compulsory sex education. “Our schools must be a safe place for all our children,” De Croo said in a video on Facebook on Thursday.
Earlier this month, the parliament of Belgium’s French-speaking regions approved a proposal for mandatory sex education for students aged 11 to 15, Belga news agency reported.
The researchers see a connection with protests against the new regulations in the four fires that were set on Wednesday evening, when graffiti with slogans against the reform was found at the crime scene. No such slogans were found in the school that was on fire on Thursday evening, broadcaster RTBF reports. There was initially no information about possible injuries or damage.
“Access to sex education should not be questioned. It makes our children resilient and forms the basis for good sexual health,” says De Croo. (sda/dpa)
