It is the end of a feverish manhunt that kept the US on edge: after almost two weeks on the run, a murderer who escaped from prison was captured in the state of Pennsylvania. Danelo C.*, 34, was arrested in a rural area on Wednesday morning, authorities said.
“Shortly after 8 a.m., our suspect was apprehended,” Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said at a news conference in Chester County, west of the city of Philadelphia. Prosecutor Deb Ryan was relieved: “Our nightmare is over and the good guys have won.”
According to Chief Police Officer George Bivens, a heat signal was detected from the air in the search area on Wednesday evening. Special police units surrounded the area, but had to withhold entry due to a thunderstorm. The emergency services then took action on Wednesday morning.
The Brazilian man, sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, tried to escape with a stolen gun and “crawled through thick brush,” as Bivens said. However, a police dog overpowered the 34-year-old and police officers arrested the man. “He continued to resist but was forcibly taken into custody,” Bivens said.
Police officers were not injured during the operation, but C. did suffer a bite wound. Television footage showed heavily armed police officers taking the man away and putting him in an armored vehicle.
C. escaped from the Chester County Correctional Facility on August 31. Surveillance camera footage shows him climbing horizontally with his hands and feet on two opposite walls in a prison courtyard. According to authorities, the 34-year-old reached the roof of the prison, where he was able to escape despite barbed wire.
A large number of police went in search of the man who killed his ex-girlfriend with 38 stab wounds in April 2021 in the presence of her children. Authorities have deployed 500 armed police, helicopters, drones and sniffer dogs. C. always managed to avoid the authorities in the countryside.
American news channels reported extensively about the manhunt for days. C. was filmed several times by surveillance cameras during his escape. On Monday evening, he stole a rifle with a scope and a spotlight from the garage of a home – and escaped gunfire from the homeowner.
The police then warned that C. was “armed and extremely dangerous”. The man is said to have murdered a man in his home country of Brazil in the past.
How C. was able to avoid police access for almost two weeks raised many questions. Pennsylvania Governor Shapiro emphasized on Wednesday that he was “proud” of the work of the security authorities and praised their “extraordinary work”. The governor also thanked the public for their assistance in the manhunt. “We know this has been a worrying and challenging time for everyone in the region.” (AFP/jmh)
