We are working with local, national and international partners “to provide urgently needed humanitarian assistance to people in the affected areas,” a spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in New York. A UN team is on site. We are working with authorities to identify needs and support ongoing relief efforts.

As rescuers and relatives search for survivors, about 10,000 people have recently gone missing, according to the Red Cross. About 5,200 people were killed, according to one of the two rival governments in the country’s civil war. This number could not initially be independently confirmed.

“At this time, our thoughts are with the thousands of people affected in their communities and we stand in solidarity with all the people of Libya at this difficult time,” said Guterres spokesman Stéphane Dujarric. The government in the Libyan capital Tripoli, recognized by the United Nations, has now pledged millions in aid to the disaster areas – even though it has no control over the area.
