The Russians really didn’t expect that. While Vladimir Putin (70) rushes his reservists from the Donbass to the Zaporizhia region to stop the Ukrainian advance around Robotyne, Ukraine strikes out of nowhere at the gates of the major city of Donetsk, which has been occupied by Russia since 2015.

Earlier this week, Volodymyr Zelenky’s (45) fighters captured the northern half of the city of Opytne, just a few fields away from the occupied Donetsk airport. Ukrainian and Russian sources have confirmed the lightning advance. But even more surprising was what happened next.

As they retreated south, the surprised Russian soldiers came under heavy artillery fire. 27 men were killed and 34 seriously injured. However, they did not target the Ukrainians, but their Russian colleagues at the occupied Donetsk airport.

The incident deeply upsets the Russians

They were convinced that the storming troops were Ukrainian attackers. The Russian withdrawal from Opytne was “chaotic, almost panicky,” an eyewitness reported to the military blog “WarGonzo,” which is close to the Russian secret service. “That’s scary. No one understands how that was possible.”

The incident shows how catastrophic the communication between the different units on the Russian front is. Instead of monitoring everything, they shoot at everything that moves – sometimes doing the dirty work for the Ukrainian armed forces.

In recent days, representatives of the Russian mercenary group “Russitsch” have increasingly complained about poor radio connections at the front via the Telegram messaging service. Without clear communication, every war mission is doomed to failure.

Historical reconquest of territories occupied in 2015

Speaking of communications, the Ukrainians delivered a historic blow to the Russian attackers at the end of August, as has now been announced. Ukrainian special forces have captured several oil rigs known as the ‘Boyko Towers’ between Odessa and Crimea.

The Russians have used the platforms since 2015 as landing sites for helicopters and locations for military radar equipment. The Ukrainians have now dismantled this surveillance equipment in Moscow’s service. A war strategist in Kiev explained that the “Russian eyes and ears” in the area had been removed.

With the attack on the Boyko Towers, the Ukrainians managed to retake territory occupied by Russia for the first time since 2015. Another historic partial victory. And another indication of how overwhelmed the Russians are with their own murderous mission.

Putin wants to recruit another 140,000 men

As the British Ministry of Defense reported early this week, Putin wants his mission to be completed by the end of the year. another 140,000 soldiers to recruit for his bloody war – in addition to the 280,000 who have already received marching orders.

If the inexperienced recruits at the front continue to shoot themselves in the back because they lack the training and resources for a functioning information exchange, the 140,000 newcomers to Putin’s ranks will not be able to realize his great power fantasy either.
