So far, origin labels only exist for regional specialties such as Parmesan cheese, champagne, Hessian apple wine, Black Forest ham or Spree Forest pickles. In the future, traditional craft and industrial products such as jewellery, textiles, glass or porcelain could also be identified using protected geographical indications.
This is intended to increase awareness of traditional products, secure jobs and attract tourists, said responsible rapporteur Marion Walsmann (CDU). “It will also ensure fair competition for manufacturers, help them fight counterfeit products and give consumers the assurance that they are buying a genuine product.”
Control and enforcement of the new rules will then be in the hands of national authorities. In the future, they should also check goods sold online. EU countries still have to agree to the project, but this is considered a formality.
