Up to 40 percent: Carrefour warns of hidden price increases

“Shrinkage inflation, the weight of this product has decreased and the price from our supplier has increased,” according to the stickers that Carrefour wants to place on packets of coffee, chips, mayonnaise and iced tea, among other things, the company announced. “We are committed to renegotiating the price,” the sticker continues.

Carrefour is thus anticipating a draft law with which the French government wants to oblige the industry to clearly indicate on products whether the contents of the same packaging are reduced.

“Some manufacturers reduce the contents of their products while keeping the packaging the same and sometimes even increase prices. This is scandalous,” said Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire. “In October, we will enshrine in law the obligation to visibly indicate the reduction in content if the packaging is the same.”

Purchasing power and high prices, especially for food, are currently a concern for the population and politicians in France. Minister Le Maire had repeatedly demanded lower prices from food companies and relief for consumers. As the minister announced last week after consultation with the sector, prices for 5,000 foodstuffs must remain stable or reduced.

Le Maire also pilloried several major foreign companies, which he said were not doing enough to guarantee acceptable prices. The products mentioned by Carrefour also come from foreign food companies. (SDA)
